If there is a cornerstone in the framework of contemporary Spanish cinema, it would undoubtedly be Álex de la Iglesia (Bilbao, 1965). His vision of cinema as a crossroads between the cultured and the Dionysian — expanding the boundaries of what was possible in Spanish film through the fantastic and the vitriolic comedy — has influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike. Among them were the attendees of the 20th Alcalá de Henares Film Festival, who, in 1990, witnessed the fierce emergence of a 16mm short titled Mirindas asesinas. Thirty-five years later, we welcome the Bilbao-born director as the first recipient of a new award that seeks to honor those essential figures who took their first steps in our festival — a true quarry of raw cinematic diamonds.
